This product completely eliminate razor cuts and razor burn for me. I would say that my beard hair is both dense and thick. As a result, the razor wears out quickly and since I have to go over the same area multiple times, I experience razor burn and lots of small cuts, especially on the neck. Furthermore, I ONLY shave after I have been in the shower for 15-20 minutes.
I have tried different shaving creams, gels, foams and they all performed the same for me i.e. not very well. I think I came across this product on Amazon while looking for some kind of relief. I bought it based on the great reviews and here I am, compelled to offer my own 5-star review.
This product has the consistency of mucus (sorry but that is the closest comparison I can think of). It is also non-comedogenic so it won't clog your pores and cause you to break out like many other products. You squeeze out a few drops of this product and rub it over your face before applying whatever normal gel, foam or cream you normally use for shaving. This product seems to create a thin film of lubrication over your face so your razor does not drag on or dig into your skin. The effective result is a new razor feel during shaving. This means that you when you are running the razor on your skin, you don't feel much except, lo and behold your skin is left baby smooth!
There is no greasy after-feel and it washes right off. I think the product has some soy ingredient or something in it as well, which must do some good to the skin, because your skin both feels and LOOKS great.
Now, admittedly a lot of what I'm writing here sounds like hyperbole but this product does me so much good that I think I owe it to the manufacturers to put it in a good word for their product and hope that they continue making it.
However, the reason I took one star off this product is because it is obscenely and unjustifiably expensive. The manufacturers know that they have a great product (perhaps even the best but I can't say that for sure since I haven't tried them all) and so they are going to milk every penny out of their monopoly over a great product. This product should have been in the $10-15 range. Even at that price, the product would fall firmly in the premium category since the bottle contains so little of it. At $21 though, this product is criminally over-priced. I hope the manufacturers would either lower the price or introduce a bigger bottle where we get a lower price/ml of the product.
I loved Lab series Shave oil .. And in fact I bought both this last time .. and john allens was just to try out ... at first I was put off by how thick this was compared to Lab Series and also it has a Mentholatum smell and feel on your face .. So I was ready to put it aside.. but when I tried half my face in John Allens and Half with Lab Series, I could feel the difference of the Shave.... they're both pretty slick stuff to put on your face ... but lab series is lighter/thinner covering so it would feel rougher to shave with that alone, whereas john allens i could just shave without the need of shave cream or lotion... .....Also, price per ounce in comparison to Lab Series this is much cheaper .. So I would have to say that I am now a believer.. I really didnt want to be and have touted the Lab Series Stuff to all my friends to use for shaving .. but now I have something better .. I really like it and will be buying more in the future.. One final note.. On the lab series .. it has a little pump dispenser .. I have often found that its super hard to control when you hands a super slick from that stuff .. and this is a little squeeze bottle .. which I find easier to control even if your hands are slick with this on it .. so thats also a pro in my book ..
Update: so here's the thing: shake it and shake it good. All of the ingredients that make this a good product sink to the bottom of the bottle. Since my last review on this I bought another bottle and shook the crud out of it before I used it. It made all the difference. It now is my goto pre shave
I bought this about 6 months ago when it was $30 on
prime and had a 5 star rating. I tried to like it, I used the entire bottle, but no, I just can't recommend this product. I switched from a much cheaper product to this. I experienced more razor burn then with other pre shaves. This morning I had enough and went back to the cheaper preshave after six months of this product. All I can tell you is that I had no razor burn at all. First time that has happened in six months. Just FYI: I use a Merkur slant filled with Persona blades , Michel's woolfat soap, or the Art of Shaving's lemon sented shaving cream. I now use Prosaso preshave and Nivea aftershave. I also use a Shavex alum block.
Try it if you want, I did, but don't expect it to live up the hype in the other reviews.
New packaging but same product that I have been using since its inception. I highly recommend using if you have coarse/ tough beard. Lasts a long time. Far superior to other products and "pre shave oils." I have highly sensitive skin and this does not irritate me at all. Buy now!
This is really good if you have sensitive skin to prepare your skin to shave. It is very slick and helps a lot while shaving. You use such a small amount that it last for 2-3 months and totally worth it!

I was sceptical about this product but because I have such problems with ingrown hairs and nicks I thought I would give it a try. It is excellent. Slick as owl s***. I won't shave without it again.
I am editing this because after 3 months I still have not had an ingrown hair since using this product. It is awesome stuff.
Again I am editing this more than a year and a half after first using this stuff because I still have not had one ingrown hair or nick while using it. My wife has even noted it and asked how have I been not getting ingrowns.
It just works. I have tried a few other preshave solutions, but this has been the best. My method: wet face with warm water; use about three drops of this to coat my whiskers; apply lather. One drop goes a long way. I have been using this with every shave (not daily) and it has lasted more than 24 months.
This product has 5 star ratings by everyone who has used it. I was a little skeptical about the product and the cost but decided to try this.
Background info: Newbie to DE shaving with Edwin Jagger 89l razor, derby and bic blade and Talyor of old bond street Jermyn collection. VERY sensitive skinI was doing a two pass shave with more razor time on face. I was using another popular brand of pre-shave cream. This cream left my face red and plenty of ingrown hairs.
Slick Water made a huge difference on my face. The first time I used it, my razor glided over my face on the second pass. Afterwards, I felt like I did not even need to use aftershave as my face was not red and burning. Absolutely no razor burn. I can tell if I do not put enough on my face because that is where I can feel aftershave working. Anywhere else, it does not even feel like the aftershave is needed.
I have had no gum buildup on the razor. Razor is still sharp and I want to start trying a third pass against the grain to get the baby butt smooth feel. I would estimate that this will last me about 6 to 8 months. I am putting enough on so that I can actually feel slick water on my face as this results in the best shave. As of right now, I will not shave without it again and am now a product believer.
This gel like solution is exactly what the name of it says it is - slick. It provides protection and doesn't clog up your razor. While it's a small bottle, it doesn't take a lot of the product to be effective. I usually use this on pass #2 or #3, when the neck starts to get a little irritated or could get irritated in a hurry. Would definitely order this again.
I have used several different brands and types of Pre-shave products, and this is the best one I have found to date. It does not clog the razor ( I use a few different styles of DE safety razors). It does not leave your face feeling oily and rinses clean. I was concerned with the price, but it appears that this product will go a long way. I have trouble with bumps on my lower neck (creases)The Proraso brand Pre-post shave product works pretty well; but Slick Water far outperforms it! I would recommend this Pre-shave oil to anyone.
