Philips Norelco Electric Shaver 9700, Cleansing Brush, S9721/89

Philips Norelco Electric Shaver 9700, Cleansing Brush, S9721/89

Im not usually one for writing reviews but I feel compelled to do so. I read so so many reviews on these razors, and I gotta tell ya i read far more negative reviews then positive. I came close to shutting the book on this purchase, then one day i looked in the mirror and saw facial hair i didn't like. As a quadriplegic shaving is a chore and one that is on going, if I shave at night before bed i need another shave by noon. So I said hell with it ,if I don't like it I'll send it back. Well I was pleasantly surprised! I love the way it fits in my hands ( not having very good dexterity) the power button is easy to push! And most importantly it gave me a very very close shave! it's a game changer! I haven't even tried shaving wet yet, I could only assume that it's better. And the self cleaning is awsome too. They say you have to replace the blades after about a year for around $50. I don't care, I spent that much on expensive razors. The fact is, it's not quite as close as a razor blade shave, but it's damn close. I can live with it. I give the 9000 series 5 stars and 2 thumbs up!

Having spent more than a year with this shaver, I've come to know it pretty well. Here's my take on it.

This is clearly intended for people who shave either every day, or every other day. When it first arrived, it had been 3 days since my last shave, and this shaver tugged, yanked, and left me with a very patchy shave that I had to rescue with a manual razor.

Not being able to use it while it's plugged-in is annoying. Back in 2005, I bout another Norelco for half the price of this one, and it could shave and charge simultaneously.

On the topic of charging, I shave every other day, and an average charge lasts me about 2 weeks. An average shave takes me about 10 minutes, uses up about 10% of the battery, and the battery loses 1% charge per day that it sits idle. A full charge takes about an hour. They tell you to let the shaver run all the way down between charges, so I have to assume it must have a Nickel-based battery, rather than a Lithium-based battery.

I find that this gives smoother results if used in the shower, and with shaving cream.

I have very coarse, fast-growing facial hair. I can grow a full beard in a week. This shaver does give me smoother results than a safety razor. However, it requires a lot of work and multiple passes. Thankfully, you can really press this shaver into your skin without any irritation resulting, but unfortunately you kind of need to in order to get close and smooth.

The shaver started asking me to replace the blades at almost exactly the 1 year mark. A cleaning fluid cartridge lasted me about 2 months, but you can clean it just as well in the sink. The cleaning cycle in the stand takes something like 3 hours, but I can clean it by hand in 30 seconds.

Perhaps, most importantly, more expensive does not mean better. I learned this the hard way. My previous Norelco was half the price, and a better shaver. This one is slower, more delicate, more fiddly, and doesn't offer any real tangible advantages over the cheaper models I've used. It still gives a good shave, but you can get the same shave for less. The stand just takes up a lot of space and doesn't do anything terribly useful. The travel case looks nice, but this thing popped apart while traveling, and I had to figure out how to snap the case back together.

Overall, it's good, but I'd say to get a cheaper model.

I used the older style Norelco for many years (e.g. 3000 and 4000 series). I always thought about getting the more expensive top of the line razors but wasn't sure it was worth the cost. I bought the 9700 and went for the best one because Amazon had such a good deal on it. Now that I've had both, I'm not sure I'd buy the more expense models. The 9700 does glide across my face better and seems to miss less hairs. However I don't feel like it shaves as close. The cheaper heads seem to have a thinner casing which means closer shave, but I did have to go over my face more often to get all hair. The top cover that holds the heads in the 9700 has more material around the outside of the head, so it's harder to shave around my nose and sideburns because the blade isn't close to the end of the cover. Hard to explain, but I felt it was easier to tell where the blade was with the cheaper model. I also miss the convenience of having the trimmer built in. It's a pain snapping off the razor to add the trimmer, but the trimmer does seem a little wider with the 9700. The best part of the 9700 is the battery level indicator. I haven't used the cleaning kit but don't feel it's important. The blades for the 9700 rinse better and leave almost no hair stuck around the blades. For me, the best razor would be combination of the older and new styles. Unless you have money to spare, I think you'd be just as happy with the cheaper models. If you can find a model that uses the HQ9 blades, they're the best.

I have tried a few different methods of shaving - Gillette, Wilkinson Sword, Schick cartridges, old fashioned safety razors etc and was never really too impressed or that good at shaving...I find shaving a bit of a pain and look homeless after 3 days. I did a lot of research around electric razors and had a few reservations, then I saw just before Christmas this razor was on special offer.

It arrived with the older style Smart Clean Pro - not the one with the bars that go around the unit. I had a replacement sent but this was still the old version and I couldn’t be bothered with the faff of trying to explain to the amazon customer service people what the problem was! The cleaner works fine - I shave, put it on the cleaner and go to work so I wouldn’t even notice the light bars anyway...!

In terms of shaving - it does a take a little getting used to and sometimes, for me, it misses the odd longer/random hair. But it is clean, mostly consistently close and comfortable - very infrequent pulling and no razor burn on my fairly sensitive skin. This is when dry shaving.

Wet shaving is a completely amazing experience. I use a badger brush and art of shaving cream. With this razor it is a great shave, very comfortable, very close and the best time I have had shaving!

Apart from the niggly and probably not important cleaner difference, this is well worth a few hundred dollars! I hope it lasts a good few years!

The shaver is amazing. One of the best shavers I have used. It gets more hair than other rotary and foil shavers but not as close as some of the higher model foil shavers such as the Arc 5 from Panasonic.

The shave also causes more irritation than foil shavers.

I've owned it for awhile now and the quality is still good, no signs of it looking like it'll fail.

Battery life is great and it's easy to know how much life is left with it's percentage left showing.
You can use this both dry and wet, I'd personally get closer better shaves using it wet with cream.

All in all a great shaver.

I got it for $160 at the time so if wait for a sale, $300 for this is a lot especially with the new S9000 model out.

What I like.
Ergonomic design, is shaving better and faster than my previous Norelco shaver, easy to use, easy to clean and recharge, light shaver, easy access to the shaving cutters.
All heads are detachable so you can attach so far three heads: shaving, trimming and skin cleaning head.
What I don't like.
The cleaner is not cleaning completely. I notice some dirt on lower cutting head.
Cleaning is fine if is used to clean built up grease and grease the cutting blades. If you try to clean without blowing inner hair the cleaner is incapable to remove all internal hair from the shaving head. And make sense since you do not want to allow cut hair to exits outside of the shaving head while shaving.
You need it to clean it more often, the shaving head has less capacity for cut hair. Basically you need to clean it after every or other use. In the manual said you can wash it. But if you wash it you need to dry it in order to placed in the cleaner and clean it.
There is no cleaning only option. The cleaning can be started every time when you charging. So if you want to clean it more often you need to charge it more often. I don't know how this works with battery life. Should be fine since is Lithium Ion type.
Battery has less capacity than previous shaver. This not an issue for home usage since is so easy to recharge it. But if you are in vacation this can become an issue unless you carry the charger also. Unfortunately the carrying case has not enough room for charger.
Also I notice that the position of the On/Off button is easy to touch it during shaving, so sometime you can stop the shaver even when you don't want it.
The trimmer is not built in the shaver, you need to detach the shaving head and attach the trimming head.
I would give 3.5 stars

Good:
I use Philips electric shavers for 30 years and this one gives the best and closest shave.
Great informative display.
Cleaning station saves time and doing a great job.
Amazon support is quick and useful.

Bad:
As many others wrote, it comes with a cleaning station from 9300, i.e. without the progress lightened pass. There are only stage lightening symbols. The difference is purely aesthetics but it differs from the site picture. I don't know if it is Amazon or Philips fault but the fact is a fact.

Ugly:
Do not put on it any pressure while shaving. If you do it and the shaver is under the angle, the upper part of the head can detach from the bottom and fall down. It's not a catastrophe but definitely not nice.

im new to the electric shaver world and I wanted a smooth clean shave, and I was not disappointed by this shaver. easy to clean and easy to change blades. simple to use and comes with great travel case ( depends on purchase options). the one caveat is the replacement heads are expensive and must come from Philips Norelco. any thing purchased form aftermarket suppliers are knock offs and will not work... they will fit but will not work. I ordered a set of replacement blades from (here) and they correct number is sh90/62 and I got a box with no tool and when pulled of company stickers turned out to be a sh90/52 which are to big

This is a great shaver. if your in the market for a new one and want to treat yourself a little bit go for this model. the numeric battery charge indicator is more useful then you could imagine. the cleaning charging base and brush and great added features to a nice shaving system. highly recommend.

I wrote a review on the Norelco 5500 and it was not a good one, but very truthful. I am so disgusted with it that I had considered never buying another Norelco. It is the worst that I have had in my 76 years. I am not sure if I need to use it as a boat anchor. I got my new model 9700 a few days ago and it is the best shavers that I have ever had. I have a red beard and it is tough. This 9700 is so quiet and smooth. It leaves no stubble at the corners of my mouth, under my nose and under my chin. I have used it three days and used it dry. I have never had such a smooth shave. Everything works so well. I am truly shocked. Sure it is expensive, but it is worth it. It is everything that it is advertised to be. The model 5500 is nothing it is said to be. I had to replace the head at two months and two months later it needs it again. I will refer the 9700 to all my friends. It is a completely different design. Thanks to someone for redesigning that sorry model 5500. GOD BLESS AND KEEP YOU.
