I've always tried to save money on shaving cream because just using soap as been enough (especially since I've needed to shave once a day since I was 13). But now my skin has become rather sensitive after shaving from just using soap so I was looking for a better alternative than shaving cream. It's not really a money issue anymore but I like to leave less of a carbon footprint from leaving empty bottles, cans, spray etc.
I'm really glad I found this. It comes in a small cardboard box and from the looks of using it everyday for a few weeks; it will last longer than a an of shaving cream. To be honest when I first got it I embarrassingly had no idea how to get it foaming properly. I bought it with the bowl so I thought I needed to cut a little off and drop it in there and soak it a bit and stir it with the brush. This obviously sadly failed. I watched a youtube video how to do it and was embarrassed how simple it was. Just stick it in a bowl and soak the brush and then just stir the puck in the bowl and it foams up really well. It feels much smoother while and after shaving and I love it. Bought it for my dad as well.
FYI; I bought the AKStore bowl with this and it literally barely fits in the bowl. You can stuff it in with force and make it work with a little more of a mess outside the bowl, but I just bought a bigger bowl that keeps the mess inside.
UPDATE 12/03/17: I bought this puck on Sept 7th and starting using it on the 10th. It's Dec and the volume is down to about half (I shave once a day). Safe to say I'm getting a great bang for my buck on this product. Never using shaving cream again and no more "can" usage yay!
I have been a wet shaver for several years and have many favorite soaps and creams I use. Favorites include Truefitt & Hill 1805, Taylor of Old Bond Street sandalwood, Tabac, Proraso creams, and Mitchell wool fat. I tend to collect soaps and shave with whatever scent tends to match my mood. Feeling manly then Tabac, feeling suave then the 1805, a refreshing shave on a hot day then eucalyptus Proraso it is. Now I have a new soap for my arsenal of multiple personalities. I use hot water, a badger hair brush, a shaving scuttle, and a double edge razor (of course!).
This is a glycerin based soap like Colonel Conk so you can microwave or melt it on the stove and pour it in a cup and it will harden to the shape of the cup.
The hot water was poured on the brush then twirled into the hard soap upside down for a few seconds then spun in the scuttle to a thick, hot lather. The lather stayed thick on the face and did NOT dry out as some soaps do. The scent is mild and similar to perhaps an earthy incense. It's what I imagine Nepal to smell like, although I have never been there. Protected the face well and leaves a light lingering scent after washing off. Will definitely buy again. Also made in the USA, imagine that.
One potential suggestion would be a better way to wrap the soap for shipping so they don't melt in 110 degree weather and leak out of the little bag wrapping it's in.
This is my second order of this soap, and I have really liked it. It lathers well, and a puck will last at least 3 months. I was originally concerned about the shape of the puck, as it is much narrower than my shaving mug/bowl, but the company sent me instructions (with my first order) about how to microwave it in the mug to get it to "melt" and conform to the shape of the bowl, which works much better so I don't spend my time chasing the puck around with my brush, and can just lather.
The aroma is pleasant, and it is great to start the morning with it. I also love the fact that it has natural ingredients (whatever the specific meaning of that is), which satisfies my need to be sustainable and organic-ish. I expect I'll be using this for a while!
My boyfriend has been shaving with a viking single blade razor for a long time, but had not purchased a brush or traditional lathering soap. After researching the best reviewed products for his coarse beard hair, I bought this soap and an Edwin Jagger Badger Hair Brush, along with the Vikings Blade soap bowl. He exact words were "The brush and soap...OMG f***ing great! I didn't know what I was missing...I feel like I don't even need aftershave!"
That's enough proof for me: he had the emailed instructions from this company and we also went off of another reviewer's instructions of "a few hot water drops on the soap for a few minutes and the swirling the brush on it for a count of 30."
It makes me want to try it on my legs because I have been reduced to shaving with grapeseed oil due to my sensitive skin.
Just started using this shaving soap today. I was able to work up a good lather that was enough for my normal 3 passess. I put a little hot water on the puck and let it sit for a couple of minutes, swirling my brush for a count of 30, worked up a lather in my lather bowl. Good smooth comfortable shave. I don't know why people have a hard time getting a good lather out of a natural ingredient shave soap, unless they have hard water with no water softener. The soap left my face feeling smooth, razor glided over my face.I purchased the neutral fragrance to see if my skin would get irritated, no irritation from the product just a smooth comfortable shave.
I would recommend this product and will probably buy again.

I'm really pleased with this soap overall. It makes a nice rich lather, has a minimal but pleasant scent, and is all natural. I wasn't able to melt it in my shave bowl using any of their suggested methods as I use a double-wall stainless steel bowl. Instead I put the puck in a pyrex measuring cup and microwaved it for 20 seconds and then poured it into my bowl. By the next morning I had a nicely set and perfectly formed bowl of soap ready to go.
I have been using this soap daily now for just over a week and have had no irritation or anything at all. It lathers up really quickly and holds the brush well. Both my daily safety razor and test disposable razors cut and slid over my skin with ease. After shaving my skin feels soft and well hydrated but no grease or oil or anything left behind, just crazy soft skin.
I bought this soap when I started using a straight razor about a year ago. I loved it when I first shaved with it and I still love it today. I have always had sensitive facial skin and would always get razor burn with a cartridge razor, no matter how many pre- and post-shave products I used. When I first started using a straight razor, I had a different foaming soap and had better results but still some razor burn. The first time I used this soap, I had absolutely no razor burn afterwards. I shave every other day and still to this day my razor burn is gone completely. For this I am very grateful! This soap also lasts a very long time -- I cut the puck in half when I first received it and nearly a year later I'm still on the first half. My wife also loves the scent to boot.
Received well packaged, in its own box and plastic wrapped.
Removed the wrap and the soap had a light, clean sent.
The sent is there but it will not get in the way of after shave or cologne.
It was a bit too big for my soap mug, so I melted it in the microwave. It only took one 20 second round and the outer edge liquefied and took the mugs shape. The next day it was ready.
I picked up my favorite badger brush and began to whip up some lather. Light touch and little water and I had plenty of thick lather. It went on easy and stayed in place. It stayed moist throughout my shave and the Astra blade left no razor burn.
I'm thoroughly satisfied and will definitely be back...
Excellent Shave Soap! I've used it for about a week every day so far and it is the best hard soap I've used. I have used Proraso, Art of Shaving and Van Der Hagen. Of all those soaps I like this one the best and when factoring the price, it's my very favorite. They claim that you do not need any pre-shave treatment (oils, etc.) or aftershave (blame, lotions, etc.) and they are correct. In the dead of winter when skin gets really dry, I only use this soap with no aftershave and my face still feels soft, smooth and moisturized. I figure using this soap and a DE blade saves me a lot of money and I get a better quality shave that doesn't tear my face up. The first day I used it, it did take some effort to get a good lather going. On day two, it took about 15 seconds to whip a nice, thick creamy lather that provides fantastic glide and protection. I have been DE shaving for about 4 years and even with my experience some minor nicks and cuts happen from time to time. I haven't experienced any irritation or nicks and cuts at all with this soap. The protection is superior. Art of Shaving soap is nice too but it costs $35 a puck and is so thick it doesn't rinse off the blade very well. I also had stubble sticking to the my sink after using that soap and my razor was caked with dried soap. This stuff provides the same superior shave and doesn't guck up your blade or your razor or you sink. For $13 a puck I couldn't be happier. I use Feather blades in a Merkur 38C razor. The use an Omega Boar Hair Brush and a Marvy shave mug. It all works together very well for a superior and economical shave!
I'm a new wet shaver. I started wet shaving because I enjoy the shaving experience, and frankly went through several different soaps until I tried The Men's Shaving Soap. I knew that I wanted a soap that would give a good lather but didn't know what to look for that would give me that thick rich lather for a good shave. I tried The Men's Shaving Soap and man, was it different! This shaving soap gives me what I knew was out there! With The Men's Shaving Soap I get the good, clean and fresh feeling, that I was looking for. I read that this soap contains all natural ingredients, I'm not a chemist so I'm not sure if that is why it offers rich lather, a clean shave and good feeling after, I just know it does all those things and gives me so much more than I ever found, either from a can or the other soaps that I tried. A Big Thanks, to The Men's Shaving Soap for this great product, and 5 Stars to Amazon for making it available to the guys who enjoy the shaving experience.
