I was introduced to Detroit Grooming Co. "Corktown" grooming oil by a trusted friend. The oil is actually a mix of multiple oils, (see ingredient list) and feels and smells great.
I have previously only had experience with beard waxes and pomades, and they always have seemed more work than was really worth going through, and they all tend to leave the beard too shiny and the hair feeling greasy. Even after combing it out, waxes make it obvious you've got product in your beard. Totally whack.
Anyways, this oil is easy to administer, by keeping your finger over the opening in the bottle, and dabbing on the oil through the beard. I usually only need three of such applications, and my beard it about 3 inches long. You can then spread the oil my a gentle massage throughout the rest of the beard. A little dab under the nose leaves a pleasant scent for hours.
I find that I apply the oil twice a day, and I expect the 1 ounce in the bottle to last a few months.
As for the smell, it is heavy on the vanilla, but not overpowering. The tobacco is much like a black and mild cigar, but more refined, like an unburnt high quality pipe tobacco, the kind that reminds you of Grandpa (in a good way, not an old pishy pants geriatric way). The cedarwood is underlying the first two aromas, but is definitely there. Sometimes tobacco is overpowering, but in this blend, it is in equal measure with the vanilla.
INGREDIENTS: Sweet Almond Oil, Vitamin E Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil, Safflower Seed Oil, Rice Bean Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, Avocado Oil, Wheat Germ Oil, Fragrance and Essential Oil.
PROS:
+ Excellent fragrance - balanced, and inviting
+ Leaves the hair conditioned, but not shiny or greasy
+ No scary or overly chemical ingredients
+ One ounce will last a long time
CONS:
- The cap is small, metal, and tricky to replace if your fingertips are oily!
I have purchased Corktown beard oil several times now. It seems that the formula has been changing from batch to batch, as earlier bottles that I purchased had a different smell than the newest ones (especially earlier batches that came in square bottles rather than rectangular bottles). While I don't altogether dislike the most recent incarnation, I really really liked the old formula better.
This is a great oil that does a fantastic job of softening my beard and smells great. The Corktown scent actually smells like pipe tobacco, not pipe smoke, but pipe tobacco. Honestly I wish the scent stayed longer, but most don’t.
Being a black male, I'm always concerned with whether hair products are going to work good on my super thick hair but this product did the trick. My only critique is that the vanilla is a little overpowering. Something about it reminds me of the smell of too much chapstick on my lips. Anyways, this lead me to trying the Traverse City scent and that one instantly became my favorite. At the time of this, there's way more reviews on this one than Traverse City so I'm in the minority. So try it for yourself a lot of people like this one.
This oil is wonderful!!! My husband has had some scents in the past from other places and they about knock you over. We both love the smell of a pipe and this gives you just the right amount of that great smell without being over powering.

Description
Size: 1 oz. - Scent: Vanilla, Tobacco, and Cedarwood Named after the oldest neighborhood in Detroit, we've been told that our Corktown Beard Oil scent is reminiscent of the old world. Perhaps of a simpler time, when a man never let a day go by without putting in hard work, and knew how to kick his feet up when he got home to relax with the smell of sweet tobacco in his pipe. Corktown is an easy scent that is sweet and yet mild enough to let you know that you can relax all day as our pleasingly scented oil goes to work in your hard earned beard. Expertly blended, the cedarwood, vanilla, and tobacco, will draw you back in your chair with that rare kind of satisfaction. - BEARD OIL BENEFITS FOR YOUR SKIN Our blend of Sweet Almond Oil forms the foundation of the rest of our award-winning beard oils and is loaded with many skin and hair benefits. Rich in vitamins A, B and E, Sweet Almond Oil helps in maintaining moisture levels of the skin and gets absorbed quickly without blocking pores like so many other oils. Whether you're looking to improve your complexion, moisturize better, soothe skin irritation by relieving dryness, nourish your skin, or even cure the chapped lips hiding in your beard, this is exactly what you need. That's just your skin! - BEARD OIL BENEFITS FOR YOUR BEARD & HAIR In the hair? Well, almond oil is rich in magnesium, gets rid of split ends, and leaves your beard shiny and soft. This beard oil is a reparative solution that can be used daily to saturate deeper than most oils and reverse damage. It also contains a higher content of mono saturated fatty acids than any other beard oil, making our beard oil the most intensely moisturizing oil available. They're chock-full of antioxidants and proteins to repair your skin and hair!
A awesome blend of vanilla, tobacco and cedar make this one of the best fragrances out there. Just strong enough to stay with you throughout the evening.
Great texture for a beard oil. It's not too runny that it drips but not too thick that it doesn't give an even spread. The scent is really great. I get a strong vanilla with more subtle hints of the tobacco and cedar wood. I personally like that. If you're not as in to the vanilla, this might not be the scent for you but if their other scents are of the same quality oil, you will not be disappointed.
Great smell. Nice consistency. Doesn’t last long but it’s more for softening and conditioning the beard. Good mix of vanilla and tobacco.
Love the smell. Love the way it makes my beard feel. I've had no beard itch or dry skin.
After reading/watching several reviews I decided to give this beard oil a try. The scent is very nice! It smells like vanilla pipe tobacco with cedar wood, and the scent lasts for “several” hours. It’s a thicker (premium feeling) oil, so a little definitely goes a long way. Give it a try!
