This was 1st time using Henna. I am allergic to many chemicals in dyes and other hair products. I read pretty extensively about Henna, and tried to heed warnings of companies not using all pure ingredients, but adding dangerous chemicals that have caused harm. I decided on The Henna Guys due to claims of none of these added, it being dated for freshness, and double packaged in foil bag. I purchased the dark brown kit, which entails a 2step application process to properly achieve results. I mixed both separately, using 1/2 water and 1/2 lemon/vinegar/red wine mixture. I left overnight on counter with cling wrap. Next day, I applied the Pure Henna 1st. I left on 31/2 hrs. It made my hair a bright I Love Lucy orange/red. I considered keeping it that way! I placed the Dark brown mix in fridge overnight to decide. Next morning I applied the dark brown. I didn’t want total dark brown, but somewhere in between with a highlight effect. I braided my hair into sections, then applied, so that the dark brown would not penetrate fully. I left on for 2 1/2hrs. Both times it rinsed out well, and once rinsed, absolutely no more bleeding. Rinsed again with conditioner, and saw no color rinsing out. Also, no pillow staining. I am so happy not feeling any scalp irritation at all, unlike dyes. It covered grays extremely well even with only 1st application. I Love this Henna, and so do those around me. Great product, sister ordering too
I am a natural redhead. After having kids & getting older the warm copper of my hair faded. This henna revived my hair & brought it back to the warm copper it was in my younger days! I'm a customer for life!
I read a million reviews trying to decide which colour to choose, but i eventually went with the natural henna because I assumed that would be the least chemically altered. I am black and I have black-brown hair with yellowish gold highlights that is a few inches past my shoulder. One and a half packs were exactly enough for me. I used henna mainly for the treatment benefits and the colour to my highlights is a great plus! I mixed the juice of 1 lemon, some black tea, pure olive oil and a coconut and shea treatment oil with the henna powder. I let it sit for about 2 hours and tested the stain on my skin to see the intensity of the colour. I would suggest mixing it overnight if you want very bold rich colour. I left it in my hair for 4hrs covered with a plastic cap with a hole cut in the top, then washed out with water and shampooed 3 times.
I did notice that the colour has gotten a bit brighter since the first day I put it in. I absolutely love the colour and my hair feels smoother and fuller. I definitely intend to use this again. It was pretty straightforward and cleanup was a breeze. The smell was a bit strong while mixing but i didn't smell it at all when it was actually in my hair.
I had been considering changing my hair color but didn’t want to risk damaging my hair with chemicals. I also really, REALLY wanted to try out a red color, but I knew it would involve bleach because my hair is such a dark shade of brown. SO, on a whim, I decided to try out this henna dye for the first time because the reviews all seemed fairly positive!
I made quite a strange concoction—I mixed the red-orange henna powder with a whole lemon’s worth of freshly squeezed lemon juice and 2-3 TBSP of honey (to help naturally lighten my hair color), about 1.5 TBSP of olive oil (for softness), and about 1 cup of warm distilled water (as directed on the package). It seemed pretty clumpy even after stirring, but I went ahead and covered it with plastic wrap and let it sit for about 15 hours. It was a smooth pudding-like consistency once I was ready to use it!
Now, because I read that henna tints hair color (the lighter your hair, the more vibrant the color), I was prepared for a slightly redder hair color but that’s about it. After letting it sit on my hair for 4 hours under a shower cap, I was amazed by my results—my naturally dark brown hair is definitely copper now and has never felt softer! I was so impressed!!
Hooray for natural alternatives, even if it looked like baby poop smeared all over my hair while I waited for the dye to set in! I gave it four stars because yellow-orange water still comes out of my hair each time I shower.
Unfortunately, I did not take a “before” picture before trying it out so the “before” selfie here is one I sent to my parents in December after I got a haircut, haha. No hair dye in it, though, so I thought it was a good one to show my natural color.
Needless to say, I will definitely try this again!
I would definitely order this henna again. I am a regular henna user and I use it to cover up my gray hair I normally use a brand of henna called red raj from another online retailer. This bag of henna colored my Gray's a fantastic bright burgundy while leaving my black hair black. The ingredients say it does contain indigo. I normally apply coconut oil to my hair and scalp prior to a henna treatment I am not sure if I did not apply enough because I did get the dry scalp that sometimes appears with henna treatments. This brand also says to wash hair with conditioner and then shampoo about 24 hours later. I am extremely happy with this. It was easy to apply and I also felt like it washed out better than my normal brand.

Worked great, easy to use. I don't know how well it works if you follow the directions in the package, but what I did was mix it with the juice of one lime + enough water to make a thick pudding consistency, covered it with plastic wrap and let it sit on the counter for 24hrs. I left it in my hair for about 4 hours. The mud smells pretty gross but after washing out my hair has a nice smell, like dry leaves.
Short version: I love love love this product. I found it easy to apply and the color turned out lovely (pretty much like the pictures). The smell wasn't that bad and it went away in less than a day. I also didn't experience any color run. I would highly recommend this product to anyone wanting to use a natural, non-toxic hair dye.
Longer version: I have naturally brown hair and the color turned out a deep burgundy. If you have blonde hair I would imagine the color would turn out a more vibrant red. I have fairly short hair and used about half of the henna (~50g). I mixed the henna with a spice tea water and fresh lemon juice. Before applying the henna I rinsed my hair with an apple cider vinegar and water mixture to naturally strip it of oils. Don't think this is necessary but I read somewhere it helps the color adhere to your hair. I found the mixture really easy to apply. I recommend gloves. I used a shower cap with a hole cut in the top (exactly the directions state) to cover my head and left it for 6 hours. I rinsed with warm water and then cold to help set the color. Didn't even need conditioner as my hair felt so healthy already. Went to bed with my hair wet and not even one mark on my pillowcase :). I'm assuming the people complaining of color running didn't rinse the henna out completely. As for the smell, I didn't find it so bad. A mix between green tea and hay. Beats the strong ammonia and chemical smell from conventional hair dye.
If you're thinking about buying this product, do it!
I have natural hair that hasn’t been dyed or chemically processed in 4 years but has some heat damage. My natural hair color is medium ash brown with some highlighted areas in the front as i happen to spend some time in the sun. Recently i had been trying to build a deep red color into my hair with hibiscus flowers however i realized the process was taking longer than I expected. The first pictures are my hair before the process but after several treatments of the hibiscus. The second picture is in my bathroom under my heat light. Most of the following pictures will be in that lighting. I bought the burgundy pack. Once I made the mixture I didn’t let it sit to process as the instructions in the package said that wasn’t necessary for the burgundy or red hennas, however I contacted the henna guys after noticing some contradicting information on the website and they said that the henna should be left to process for 8 to 10 hours for dye release before placing on hair. I did two strand tests to determine the mixture I wanted to use. When I just used black tea the test came out more of an auburn color so I changed the liquid mixture and did a second. I was satisfied with the results. Here’s the liquid mixture I used: I made 4 oz of earl grey tea, steeped 1 cup of hibiscus flowers in 8 oz of water, and made 10 oz of dark roast coffee. Per 2 tbsp of henna powder I added 1 tbsp of each liquid for a 2:3 powder to liquid ratio. I didn’t add ACV as I read the acid can sometimes react with the alkaline indigo. It took almost an hour to put the mixture onto my hair and I feel like I didn’t get it to cover every strand. It started to dry in some places so it got difficult to do. Next time I will add a little more liquid as I think my cake batter consistency was more on the thick side. I left it in my hair overnight for 10 hours and then rinsed with conditioner till the water ran pale orange. I put Cantu coconut curling cream on afterwards as my hair felt extremely dry and I detangled my hair. The second three hair pictures were from immediately after rinsing and after I put the Cantu on and placed my hair in a ponytail. The third picture was after I cowashed my hair approximately 28 hours after rinsing the henna out and blow dried it. I then did a flexi rod set, touching up some areas that were frizzy with my straightener and the remaining pictures are the result. 3 days later the color remains the same. It came out exactly how I wanted it. I will update this review after a week.
HENNA COLOR: Mahogany
NATURAL HAIR COLOR: warm dark brown, slightly lighter at the ends
HAIR TYPE: long (mid-back), fine, super straight (typical Asian hair)
[Virgin hair: never dyed, permed, etc--only occasional heat tools]
I've been wanting to change up my hair color for quite some time now, but after seeing how salon color ruined my cousin's hair texture (like hay), I was VERY concerned about going the chemical route. I had heard about LUSH's henna bars and I generally like their products, but I'm glad I did my research and checked Amazon first! I ordered the 2-packet set of Mahogany colored henna, but only ended up using 1. For my fine, mid-back length hair, I would do at least 1.5 packets next time.
MIXING:
I started with clean hair that I shampooed the night before. Upon receiving the henna packets, I mixed 1 packet of henna powder in a large mixing bowl with warm hibiscus tea I had steeped earlier, just enough to get all the powder wet. (In case you're not familiar with it, hibiscus tea is a deep burgundy color, which I used to hopefully bring out more red tones.)
With a wooden spoon I continued to mix while adding a few healthy dollops of honey for moisture. At this point the mixture was very thick, so I added more tea (while continually mixing) until I got to the consistency of pudding or thick cake batter. I then covered the bowl loosely in plastic wrap and let it sit on my kitchen counter for about 4 hours.
PREPARATION:
After about 4 hours, I took the same wooden spoon and mixed it again since it had separated a little, making sure to get all the bits on the sides of the bowl. I was already wearing an old baggy tshirt and sweats, and had covered my entire bathroom floor with newspaper. Be sure to apply Vaseline all around your hairline (and ears!) or the henna might stain your skin.
The henna packets come with a pair of plastic gloves and shower cap, but unless you have large hands, I'd recommend using smaller latex gloves. I used the ones included and had a hard time applying the henna because the "fingers" of the gloves were way too long for me. I did secure the wrists with hair ties so they wouldn't slip off. I also purchased hair dye brushes and highly recommend them to get really get the henna on your roots.
APPLICATION:
I decided to apply the henna in my bathroom, with the bowl sitting it my sink. I worked in sections, pulling the hair away from my head and first using the dye brush to "paint" the roots of that section, then just using my (gloved) hands to work the henna down to the ends. Once the section was sufficiently covered, I would twist the section and form a tiny bun at the scalp. The henna should be sticky enough that it'll stay on its own. I just repeated the process over and over with a different sectionnof hair until I'd covered all of it.
I would highly recommend somehow keeping the henna warm. Mine got cold and made it harder to work with. Also, make a little more than you think you need! You can always use the extra to reinforce your little buns (lol) and just apply all over your scalp.
THE WAIT:
After application (which took maybe 45 minutes because I fumbled a lot), I took off my now-filthy looking gloves and wrapped my entire head in plastic wrap and topped it all off with the shower cap. Then I went to cleaning up the huge mess I had made! The henna thankfully didn't stain my bathroom (even the white sink) and any that had dripped was easy to clean off, even the dried bits.
I left the henna on overnight (roughly 6 hours). Do not forget to completely cover your pillow, bed, everything with dark colored towels! (Especially if you tend to toss and turn at night!)
WASHING IT OUT:
I'm not gonna lie.. washing this stuff out was terrifying, BUT I have a handheld showerhead thing and it made it so much easier and mess-free!
I basically knelt outside of my bathtub with my head and hair inside the tub and rinsed out the henna for ages with COLD water. I read somewhere not to scrub, but rather to gently use your fingers to help lift the henna from the scalp. Take extra time around the ears and the back of hairline (nape)! I did use some conditioner to help get it all out and replenish some of my hair's moisture. Once the water ran mostly clear and I couldn't feel any henna debris, I used a dark towel to gently towel dry.
My hair felt a bit dry right after washing, but that's to be expected! And of course it greatly smelled like the henna--something like tea leaves and grass maybe? I rinsed the following day (cold water), and shampooed the day after.
RESULTS:
Holy cow! I picked Mahogany because I didn't want a super obvious color change in case my hair reacted poorly.. I now wish I had chosen a red shade! My hair looks and feels AMAZING. It was in good shape before the henna, but now it feels great. Super soft, lustrous, almost somehow feels thicker? And the color--oh my lord. In low light it looks like my natural color (dark brown), maybe just a touch darker. But in the sun? Brown with a beautiful red tint.
It's been more than a week since I dyed my hair and the color is holding up beautifully. Besides the first few nights, I have not had to cover my (white!) bed/pillows at all. I do notice some color still washing out in the shower, but have not had any staining on my towels. The henna small mostly washed out within about 5 days, but whenever I wet my hair I smell it again (only while it's wet).
Would I do it again? Absolutely! But next timd in a brighter shade maybe 😊 I also posted some photos (all in sunlight):
1) my natural hair (a long time ago, much shorter than current length)
2) few days after dyeing
3) a little more than a week after dyeing
This worked wonders!! I colored my hair blue back in February and then was offered a great new job opportunity. I needed to quickly color over the blue. The dark brown colored over my blue pretty well! The pure hens turned my hair fire orange and red. The pure hena didn't smell that bad, but the dark brown hena smelled so strong! But it was well worth the in total 8 hour process. The blue is pretty much covered and the color turned out pretty :) Depending on the lighting it looks golden brown and where the blue was looks black. Or it looks purple brown and where the blue was green lol but overall it looks good and I was able to look professional for my interview :) I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking to darken their hair safely, so long as you can get past the strong earthy smell.
*I did not add any tea like recommended
