Proraso Pre-Shave Cream, Refreshing and Toning, 3.6 Oz

Proraso Pre-Shave Cream, Refreshing and Toning, 3.6 Oz

I have used electric shavers for many years as I have to shave daily for work, yet my beards falls in the unfortunate grey zone between "thick/long enough stubble to shave with a blade daily" and "can skip a day." If I use a blade daily, my face is OK but my neck looks like I have been attacked, so electrics just work better for "looking professional." I recently switched to wet shaving with an electric and a website recommended the combo of Proraso pre-shave and shave cream. With a Panasonic ES-LV9N-S this works great and I can say it is as as close as a blade as any electric can get without any irritation. I am very pleased with the performance.
Worth mentioning: this product looks and smells a lot like Noxzema and my first impression was "uh..is this just Noxzema that is overpriced?" My wife agreed it looked and smelled the same as well. I can state with confidence that it is not exactly the same- the Proraso pre-shave is a little thicker (waxier feeling?) and definitely stronger, with a far more intense smell and cooling feel. It is also harder to apply evenly due to the thicker feel. I used this for a month with great results and then on a whim decided to try a bottle of Noxzema in its place. For $1.50 I grabbed a travel size jar and gave it a test run. Due to its creamier texture, it applied more evenly. It blended well with the application of the Proraso shave cream after, and my shaves are just as close. Bottom line- for $1.50, the Noxzema works just as well as a $13 jar of this pre-shave. It is not the same product, but the ingredients are similar enough that when used in this application, the results are the same.
I have seen several posts on shaving sites addressing this, some with very aggressive "that is impossible, one is a ladies' face wash and one is a man's shave product" but bottom line- they work equally well with Noxzema being much cheaper.
I would recommend this product to anyone, but also recommend they do the same experiment I did and see what is best for them and their wallet.

I wasn't sure what to expect since it's a pre-shave CREAM which I have never used. I have used pre-shave oils, but never a creams. It has an odd consistency, but it does work well. I feel like it would work better if I had a better idea of how to apply a pre-shave cream. It reminds me of a Crisco, but much further in terms of consistency.

EDIT: Month 4 and I have decided this is my brand. It took a little time to get used to a Pre-Shave Cream as opposed to an Oil like what I have used in the past, but I have come to love it. The feel, scent, and quality of it are great. I'm sure there are better pre-shaves out there, but not for the amount of money I am willing to spend on a pre-shave. Changed to 5 stars. It's awesome.

I am a beginner wet shaver. I used to hate shaving until I had a straight razor shave at a barbershop last year and liked the experience. Since then I have been working on the technique at home and am liking it more and more. I've been using a cheap shaving soap to start with. I bought the Proraso after shave recently and enjoy it so when I needed to order a small non shaving item from Amazon I decided to throw the pre-shave in to try it out. I have to say I LOVE IT. First off, it's a cream....not an oil. It's a small jar but for a moderate shaver it will last you A LONG TIME. I showered, wet the face....three small dabs of the Proraso pre-shave cream on my finger (one for each cheek, then one for chin and around the mouth) then rubbed it in real good. It's a nice icy hot feel on the face while you lather up the brush. The shave was nice and close and my skin felt moisturized even after I wiped my face off with a towel. The icy cool feeling from the pre shave cream was still there and felt refreshing. I highly recommend this product. Adds another layer of enjoyment to a shave.

I was on the fence about this product for a while, but after using it for over a year, I can't believe I ever went without it. I decided to get this on the recommendation I saw on youtube. This stuff has been a life saver for me. I used to get the worst razor burn on my neck especially whenever I would shave. I would always break out and get tons of ingrown hairs, which made me never want to shave. Over a year ago, I made the switch to a double edge safety razor, and I couldn't have been happier. I would still get razor burn but not near as bad as with my old mach 3. From the very first time I used this product I was hooked, and over the last year, I have not shaved without it even once. I have sensitive skin and this makes my shaving experience ten times better and more comfortable. People need to understand that everyone will react differently to different products but, I would recommend this to anyone. Its the bee's knees!

(1) I wasn't sure that this was really making a difference in the quality of my shave when I started using it. While on a trip I decided not to pack it and realized what an impact it made by not using it. My shave felt rougher and I nicked my neck in a couple of spots. I am a convert.

(2) I was worried about the smell from a few of the other reviews. Fortunately, I like the smell. I find the menthol wakes me up a little more and is pretty refreshing.

(3) My last comment is about the size. I thought the container was pretty small and wouldn't last long. Following the instruction you only end up using a small amount each shave. I am guessing that I will probably get about 2-months worth of life out of the product.

Description

The product that started it all in the 1940's - the first in the Proraso range. With it's particularly rich, thick texture, Proraso Pre-Shave Cream preps the skin for a close shave, softening the beard and adding an extra layer of protection to the skin. Eucalyptus Oil and Menthol, combining a cleansing and toning action with a refreshing and revitalizing effect. For every kind of beard and skin type. Cruelty-free, with 98% of ingredients of natural origins, and of course, there’s no parabens, phthalates, silicones, mineral oils, artificial colors or sodium laurel sulfate. Originating in Italy, Proraso has been innovating professional highest-quality products in the shaving world for generations, and has evolved to become a staple of Italian culture. From the first product -- Pre-Shave Cream -- in 1948, to now, the Martelli family principles hold true: to create professional, quality products that deliver a pleasurable and impeccable shave, in the barbershop and at home. Used as a moisturizing aftershave

I've tried a whole bunch of pre-shave products, and this one is by far my favorite. Others work really well - I used John Allan's Slick Water (also awesome stuff) for a few years and felt no need to switch, but figured it was time to finally change it up.

My overall observation about the Proraso cream: I have no idea how this stuff works, but it feels so good I don't even care. If it didn't even function as a pre-shave, I'd still use it as one. Let me explain: When you put it on your skin, it doesn't really feel like it's adding a slickness that just the shaving cream/soap isn't capable of on its own.

But it is. Somehow. I tried shaving with and without, and using this stuff as a pre-shave makes for a noticeably (and markedly) better shave. No bumps, no redness, no anything except for a smooth face and the feeling that a thousand angels have kissed you on the cheeks and neck. You know, where angels usually kiss you.

Maybe it's good old Italian black magic or just something I'm missing, but however this does what it does, it's absolutely worth a try.

I am generally not an advocate for multi-step skincare products (e.g. toners, pre-shave oils, etc.). Why make things complicated? However, I recently found myself ordering several new shaving items, as an alternative to the Aveeno I’ve been using for a long while. Here’s my current shaving kit:

- Merkur razor
- A faux-badger shaving brush, by the Body Shop
- Feather Hi-Stainless Platinum Double Edge Razor Blades
- Proraso Pre-shave Cream
- Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream

Proraso doesn’t generate a lot of lather when applied with a brush. You don’t use much. It simply dries in a thin layer on your face. It doesn’t feel slick, oily or silicone-like on skin. It’s nothing like the lubrication strips fond on cartridge razors. What it does bring is the scent and tingle of menthol, in abundance. Your face feels like it’s taking a slow-boat tour of Antarctica, which, for me, is a good thing. If you’re sensitive or averse to the smell of eucalyptus … next product, please.

Applying shave cream on top doesn’t disturb Proraso; it stays happily in its own layer, next to your face, glowing like a mentholated nuclear power plant. In terms of the actual shave itself, what I notice with Proraso is an almost complete lack of drama. There is none of the tugging, scraping, pulling or bleeding that characterizes a bad shave. I don’t know how Proraso is accomplishing this feat (and, who knows, perhaps the Taylor’s shaving cream is contributing something positive), but the results are undeniable. The best part is that, after shaving my face feels moist and conditioned, rather than stripped or dried out, as can be the case with supermarket shaving creams. There’s no rush for the after shave bottle.

In summary, Proraso feels like a slightly old-fashioned shaving product, from a time when people knew a lot more than we do about what made for a good shave.

After not being able to find a pre-shave oil, with them being too thick, thin, and not providing any benefit, I turned to the trusty Proraso line of products. This pre-shave cream provides a fantastic, long lasting, nice and slick barrier under your shave cream or soap, that dramatically helped my DE safety razor glide along my face. It also has an incredible cooling menthol feel that is absolutely wonderful! Wet your face and rub in. A little goes a long way, and one jar will last a long time. A dime size per shave is more than enough. It has eliminated any shaving irritation I used to get, and I can finally quit buying other pre-shaves that simply don’t work. I use the Proraso after shave “lotion” after my shave, and the combination of the two have eliminated any and all shaving irritation. Use a good shaving brush with a shave soap or cream that works well with your skin, along with this pre-shave cream, and you’ll have baby bottom smooth shaves with no irritation. I also use an alum block after I shave but before my aftershave for added defense against irritation. An alum block is very cheap on Amazon. Don’t spend $20 for one on shaving websites. They’re all the same! Happy shaving!

...this looks, smells and feels a lot like Noxema. That said it feels good on your face and more importantly provides some extra lubrication that makes shaving soap more effective. If you use a safety or straight razor, this is an important step in getting a good shave. If you are using multiblade shaving cartridges, this stuff is the basis for that little strip at the top of the blade, but unlike that little strip, this actually does something.

This stuff is amazing and have already recommended to several close friends and family. I was not expecting the closeness, softness, and lack of razor burn from this product. I have a beard, but clean it up using my double-edged, real badger hair brush (highly recommend btw), and of course the Proraso shaving soap.
